We begin cutting-tool selection with what must be made on the part and what currently constrains the operation. The material, feature, tolerance, access, operation sequence and chip behaviour describe the task more usefully than a catalogue number alone. We therefore specify tools for turning, milling, holemaking, threading, gear machining, broaching, burnishing and special applications in the context of the actual machine and process. A cutting tool is one element of the stack. Its geometry and position in the machining chain require separate consideration from toolholding in the spindle, workholding for the part, and programme strategy. Where data needed for selection or a trial are missing, we state that plainly rather than replacing it with a claimed result.

We consider the tool, toolholding, workholding and programme strategy as a stack operating in that particular operation and on that machine. We distinguish retaining the tool in the spindle or turret from locating, supporting and clamping the workpiece.
