Process design and optimisation

Process design and optimisation begins with the part, material, required feature, tolerance, machine, current operation and the constraint that is preventing stable work today. We do not begin with an SKU or a claimed outcome. The information gathered lets us determine whether the constraint concerns the cutting tool, toolholding, the location and clamping of the part, programme strategy or digital preparation. Within this group, we connect the process audit, specification of the process stack for a specific machine, machining strategy, trial and handover of findings for further work. We understand the process stack as the cutting tool, holder, workholding and programme strategy in the same operation, not as a list of independent items. CAM, CAPP, PLM, a postprocessor, NC code and simulation remain within digital manufacturing software; they can supply data but do not replace the decision on the manufacturing route. The criterion for the next step is a machine-tool trial or an honest flag that information is missing, not a slide or a productivity promise.

This area works with the other four groups: tool, holder, workholding, digital layer and process.

We consider the tool, toolholding, workholding and programme strategy as a stack operating in that particular operation and on that machine. We distinguish retaining the tool in the spindle or turret from locating, supporting and clamping the workpiece.

Trial or clear information gap
