Digital manufacturing software

Digital manufacturing software organises data and the consecutive stages of programme preparation for a specific machine and control. The starting point is the model, process documentation, CAM already in use, machine configuration, postprocessor and any point that is currently ambiguous in the NC programme or simulation. CAM prepares toolpaths, CAPP organises process-plan data, PLM manages the data context, and the postprocessor converts the prepared programme into the format required by the machine. This group covers CAM, CAPP, PLM, postprocessors, NC code, machining simulation and the virtual machine. It does not replace recognition of a process constraint, cutting-tool selection, toolholding or the location and clamping of the part. Nor is it process-design and optimisation consultation: where the decision concerns the manufacturing route itself, we identify the need for separate process work. If information for programme preparation or verification is missing, we specify it before the next step rather than claim ready NC code or an outcome.

This area works with the other four groups: tool, holder, workholding, digital layer and process.

We begin with the material, required feature, tolerance and place of the operation in the overall machining route. This establishes what information is needed before a tool catalogue number enters the discussion.

Not to be confused with: an implementation description, an approved case study or a claim about cutting parameters.

Process stack on that machine

We consider the tool, toolholding, workholding and programme strategy as a stack operating in that particular operation and on that machine. We distinguish retaining the tool in the spindle or turret from locating, supporting and clamping the workpiece.

Not to be confused with: selecting an SKU alone or replacing process analysis with a catalogue.

03NOT A CASE STUDY

Trial or clear information gap

The criterion for this conversation is a machine trial or a clear statement of the information still missing before it can be planned. We do not replace this with a slide, an outcome promise or a generalisation to other machines, parts or production runs.

A postprocessor prepares NC code for a specific machine and control configuration. Before programme verification, we connect the control requirements with the machine configuration.
