What to assess before regeneration

Tool regeneration does not begin with the assumption that every worn tool should be restored. First, describe the operation in which it worked, what changed on the workpiece or on the tool, and which constraint was observed. Only then is it possible to discuss the wear assessment, the retention of functional geometry or another process-side next step.

Keep the tool with the operation record

A tool removed from a machine without a description is simply an item to inspect. Useful information includes the tool identification, workpiece material, feature being machined and the tool’s position in the operation sequence. State whether the work concerned milling, turning, holemaking, threading or another operation, as well as what happened before and after it. Record the observation that prompted the decision: a change in surface condition, a chip-related issue, vibration, edge chipping, fracture or unexpected wear. The first message does not need to name the cause. What matters is not to separate the tool from the conditions in which it worked. Regeneration is not an automatic response to every sign of use.

Describe the wear pattern, not only its presence

If the feature, material, access or machining sequence has changed, the appropriate next step may be a fresh tool specification or a review of the process arrangement. There should be no claim that restored geometry will resolve an issue before it is assessed on the machine.

Assess the tool body and a safe return

The tool body, retention areas and working section should be assessed together. Damage does not necessarily end the discussion about regeneration, but it should not be ignored merely because visible wear is on the cutting edge. Where a tool works in a holder, it is also worth checking whether the observation is related to its retention in the spindle rather than to the tool alone.
